Generation One - Chapter Two - Chance Encounter

Edwin woke up shortly after dawn the next morning. The cheap bed he had bought didn't provide an adequate sleep for an aspiring artist.

After eating a quick breakfast, Edwin decided to browse the newspaper. One particular classified immediately caught his eye. It read,

“The town of Riverview now provides official recognition to painters, sculptors and writers that register as self-employed. In order to register, applicants will need to complete the appropriate paperwork at town hall. All applicants that register will receive a weekly subsidy from the town in order to encourage registration and growth in these fields.”

Edwin did just that. Once he left the town hall, Edwin Chancellor was officially a registered painter.

Since he was already in town, Edwin decided to explore more of the town plaza across the street.

This time around, he strolled into the town library.

Edwin browsed the library and found an interesting book on modern paintings. After finding a chair in the corner, he made himself comfortable and read.

While deep into his book, Edwin's attention was abruptly drawn away when a young woman entered the library.

She was the woman that Edwin saw in the window from the previous night. She looked even more beautiful to Edwin as she innocently browsed the bookshelves.

Edwin gathered up the courage to approach the woman before she too became occupied with a book.
“Hello. My name's Edwin.” he managed to say while extending his hand, “I'm new in town.”

After the woman shook his hand, she looked at him for a brief moment and then replied, “Nice to meet you Edwin, I'm Constance Shelley.”

Edwin and Constance continued to quietly chat. He told her about his new property and about his love for paintings.

She listened to him contently. It was hard for Edwin to not be distracted by her gorgeous eyes that were fixed on him from behind those dark red glasses.

Constance started to tell Edwin about her career in journalism and about her favourite books. He was fascinated by the similarities between her passion for literature and his passion for art.

Edwin could see that Constance was eager to get into the books, so they both said a quick goodbye. “It was nice to meet you Edwin.” Constance said as they parted.

As Edwin left the library, a smile came across his face. He was delighted with this encounter with Constance and she was all he could think about for the rest of the day.

It didn't take long for Edwin to set a daily routine. After enjoying a quick breakfast in the morning, he would head straight to work on his paintings.

By the afternoon, Edwin would take any of his completed paintings to be sold at the consignment store.

He enjoyed his chats with the consignment specialist, Don Lothario. Don, like Edwin, was also new in town and they both found good friends in each other. On the days that Edwin didn't have any paintings to sell, he would still come to visit Don at the store.

One evening, Don invited Edwin to hang out at the town's juice bar. They both had a great time playing on the free Foosball tables.

After the game, Edwin and Don sat down and chatted at the bar. Edwin started to confide in Don about his feelings for Constance Shelley.

“I used to be big with the ladies,” Don explained to Edwin, “so big that they chased me out of their town. I was lucky enough to get away and teleport here.” Edwin secretly laughed at Don's fantasies, but he continued to listen. “Just take her out on the town.” Don continued, “That's always a good place to start.”

Edwin took a drink and decided to think for a moment. “Perhaps Don actually knows something?” he thought, “It's worth a try.”
